Automation and AI adoption could force about 11 million U.S. workers—roughly 6.5% of the current labor force—to switch to entirely different occupations by 2035, according to a report released Tuesday by McKinsey & Co. The McKinsey Global Institute estimates that over the next nine years, AI may create more jobs than it destroys, but it could still demand “the largest and most sustained workforce transformation in US history.” The firm projects automation could reduce labor demand by 36 million jobs by 2035, while AI-related and broader economic growth could add 40 million. Of the 36 million affected, 25 million may stay in their current jobs, leaving 11 million needing full occupational changes. Separately, the Labor Department also signaled a sluggish market: job openings fell to a five-month low at end-August, quits stayed near a six-year low, and layoffs declined for a second month.
