Dale Brown Has Died. As L.S.U. Coach, He Discovered Shaquille O'Neal.
xCruzo Brief
Dale Brown, the defiant LSU basketball coach who reached the Final Four twice and helped discover a teenage Shaquille O’Neal, has died. His family announced his death on Friday. Brown was 90. Hired by LSU ahead of the 1972-73 season, he turned around a program that hadn’t reached the Final Four or even the NCAA tournament in about 20 years, during a period when football dominated campus life. Over 25 seasons, he won 238 SEC games, more than any LSU coach except Kentucky’s Adolph Rupp, and took his teams to the NCAA tournament 13 times, including 1981 and 1986.
