Dangerous US heatwave looms over 4 July holiday, World Cup and Swift wedding
A dangerous US heatwave is forecast to hit the East Coast ahead of the 4 July holiday, with temperatures expected to reach and remain at 38C (100F) for several days. The National Weather Service warned that the heat index could climb as high as 115F in cities including Washington, DC, Philadelphia and New York over the holiday weekend. Heat could intensify from the Midwest into the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states on Thursday and Friday, with extreme heat warnings continuing across multiple regions. By 9:00 EST Thursday, temperatures were already near 90F in Washington and New York City, and New York’s Central Park could reach 100F on Thursday and Friday. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani cautioned residents to stay cool, and turnout plans for a Washington concert were tightened. Trump is set to speak outdoors on Saturday, despite predictions near 107F.
