Darline Graham, sister of late Sen. Lindsey Graham, sworn in as senator

Darline Graham Nordone was sworn in as the newest U.S. senator on Tuesday, succeeding her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). The appointment marks the first time in Senate history that a sibling has been sworn in to replace a senator who died in office. Nordone, 62, took the oath at 2:30 p.m., wearing a pale blue outfit, with much of the Senate and members of South Carolina’s House delegation present, as well as Cabinet secretaries Scott Bessent and Marco Rubio. Republicans hold a 53–47 majority again. Lindsey Graham died suddenly on Saturday from an aortic dissection, a heart condition. He had represented South Carolina since 1995 and backed Israel, Ukraine, and NATO. Nordone will hold the seat until January, and a yet-to-be-named candidate will run on the November ballot for a full six-year term.
