DHS Reportedly Spent Congressional Funds Meant To Counter China On America250, FIFA World Cup

The DHS reportedly redirected anti-China funds intended under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act toward security for major U.S. events, including FIFA World Cup matches and America250 festivities, according to Punchbowl News. The OBBB Act had earmarked $170 million to counter potential national security threats linked to China’s illegal fishing operations worldwide. A senior congressional and a Trump administration official said DHS instead used most of that money for event security. Republican Sen. Ted Cruz had secured the $170 million for “maritime domain awareness” technology, including tracking Chinese vessels. Around $155 million was reportedly used for counter-drone technology, with the remainder going to Coast Guard communications and a Merchant Marine credentialing system. The funds allocation occurred under former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
