Donald Trump may have to face the Belgium players after World Cup controversy
Donald Trump’s World Cup involvement has escalated into a direct sporting and political confrontation with Belgium’s national team. The chain began after Trump intervened to lift Folarin Balogun’s red-card suspension ahead of the Round of 16 match. Belgium then responded on the pitch by defeating the United States 4-1 in Seattle, with Romelu Lukaku scoring in stoppage time. Several Belgian players later mocked Trump by performing his campaign rally dance during celebrations, and the official Belgium Red Devils social media account posted a follow-up captioned “Overturn this.” If Belgium advances to win the tournament, standard FIFA hosting protocol would require Trump to present the World Cup trophy, potentially creating an awkward face-to-face moment. FIFA president Gianni Infantino said Trump and FIFA will hand over the trophy together.
