Dorm life 101: What you really need for move-in day

For first-year college students, move-in day is a high-stakes transition—and in 2024 U.S. consumers were projected to spend $12.2 billion on dorm and apartment furnishings, according to the National Retail Federation. Deidra Davis, associate vice president of enrollment management at Maine Maritime Academy, says the goal isn’t a “Pinterest-perfect” room, but a space that supports sleep, studying, and relaxing. She recommends keeping hobbies with you and setting clear expectations with roommates from day one, covering sleep schedules, guests, noise, borrowing, and cleaning. Davis advises only packing uncertain items after seeing the space, and to ask residence hall staff for help if needed.
