Building on a 2022 United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report, Sports for Nature: Setting a Baseline, UNEP’s July 16 update says World Cup hosting creates “immense pressure” on transport networks, waste systems and natural resources. Scientists estimate the tournament could generate up to 15 million tonnes of CO2. UNEP says several partner cities in its Generation Restoration Initiative used the event as a catalyst for long-term improvements through net-zero training infrastructure, large-scale tree planting, and restoration of parks and beaches. It also notes that easing access to public transport, cycling and walking can help cut emissions, since transport accounts for about 37% of total CO2.
