Education Department announces earliest FAFSA launch in program history

The U.S. Department of Education said FAFSA forms for the 2027-2028 school year are now open for students—the earliest launch in the program’s history. Typically, the application has opened on Oct. 1, but the department pointed to a disruptive start during the Biden administration tied to reforms. It also noted that the Trump administration beat last year’s opening, which occurred on Sept. 24. Education Secretary Linda McMahon said the new form was redesigned and streamlined, includes clearer language, a simpler renewal process, and lets applicants invite contributors by text. The department says some families may complete the form in about 15 minutes.
