Exclusive: Mounjaro Claims Skyrocket 30-Fold, Raising Fraud Concerns
Non-life insurance claims tied to Eli Lilly’s obesity drug Mounjaro have jumped 30-fold within a year, prompting attention from South Korea’s National Assembly, financial regulators and the insurance industry. Data compiled by ChosunBiz using figures provided by Rep. Seo Mi-hwa and the General Insurance Association of Korea show that, in Q2 this year, seven major insurers received 7.0 billion won in Mounjaro claims, with 8.3481 billion won (93.2%) tied to non-covered expenses. Clinics drove 73.1% of the total amount and 84.9% of cases (18,582). Insurers say the spike appears linked to Mounjaro’s broader approved indications and how non-life coverage reimburses non-covered medical costs, raising fraud concerns as reimbursement rules vary by provider.
