EXCLUSIVE: US FTC demands Walmart, Uber, Delta and others hand over data on personalized pricing
xCruzo Brief
The US Federal Trade Commission has issued information demands to Walmart, Uber and Delta, along with seven other companies, seeking details on whether and how they use consumers’ personal data—including location, browsing history and income—to set individualized prices, wages and job offers. The FTC said it is collecting the information to support a future study for regulators and lawmakers, as algorithmic pricing tools powered by AI have raised concerns that companies can tailor offers to extract the maximum price each shopper is willing to pay. Target, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart, United and JetBlue are also named. The FTC is using its consumer protection powers ahead of next week’s congressional elections.
