A new neuroimaging study in BMC Psychiatry links paternal education to later differences in young adults’ body weight and depressive symptoms, pointing to a possible brain pathway. Researchers analyzed 490 right-handed Chinese Han adults in Beijing (ages 18–45) who underwent resting-state functional MRI and diffusion tensor imaging on a 3.0 Tesla scanner between 2014 and 2016. Using “structural-functional connectivity coupling” in the right inferior parietal lobule as a mediator, the team found that connectivity alignment statistically explained relationships between years of fathers’ schooling and both body mass index and Beck Depression Inventory-II scores. Led by Jining Medical University and Peking University, the work suggests early socioeconomic factors may become biologically embedded.
