FAW withdraws support for Gianni Infantino as FIFA president

The Football Association of Wales has withdrawn its support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s re-election bid after what it described as failures in governance and leadership around an attempt to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors. Infantino said last week he would shelve the criticized plan, which had been rejected by three confederations, but his decade-long tenure remains under scrutiny. Prime Minister Andy Burnham called him the “wrong man” to lead FIFA, while the FAW asked for a “full and robust review.” Infantino is scheduled to run again in March for the 2027-2031 term, with the FAW becoming the first association to officially pull support.
