Gabriel Martinelli’s late winner propelled Brazil past Japan 2-1 and into the 2026 FIFA World Cup pre-quarterfinals after a dramatic Round of 32 tie at Houston Stadium in Houston on Monday. With the match level 1-1 after regulation and at the start of six minutes of stoppage time, Brazil needed a spark; Martinelli delivered, scoring in the final minute to complete a comeback from Japan’s lead. Japan took control in the 29th minute through Kaishu Sano, before Casemiro equalized for Brazil in the 56th minute. Brazil, coached by Carlo Ancelotti, dominated possession with 55% and fired 19 shots on goal to Japan’s five, including seven on target versus two. Brazil will travel to New York to face their next opponent, while Japan’s first knockout success at this World Cup was delayed.
