From 2021: WBTV's Steve Crump remembers reporting on the tragic events of 9/11 from New York City

WBTV reporter Steve Crump looked back on his trip to New York during the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, recalling how uncertainty shaped the coverage. He received a call from the WBTV newsroom at about 11 a.m. to “Pack a bag. You’re going to New York,” with twin towers hit by hijacked planes at 9:03 a.m. With air traffic halted and no smartphones, he and cameraman-turned-reporter Ron Lee drove more than 600 miles, stocking up in Richmond, Virginia before reaching Washington, D.C. around 7:30 p.m. as smoke rose from the Pentagon. He later went live at 11:16 p.m. on WBTV with anchors Paul Cameron and Denise Dory.
