Gloria Steinem, a central figure in U.S. feminism and co-founder of Ms. magazine, has died at 92. Born March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio, Steinem was known for her distinctive striped hair and large aviator glasses and spent decades traveling to speak at campuses, community centers, rallies and marches. She died Wednesday at her New York City home, according to a post on her social media page, and had recently completed a memoir to be released this fall. Steinem credited an organized women’s meeting in 1969 for shifting her into activism, and she also discussed her earlier secret illegal abortion at age 22. Friends, including Abigail Disney, said her kindness underpinned her activism.
