Starting this weekend, searches for Lake Ontario on Google Maps within the United States will no longer show the lake’s original name. Google said the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has formally changed “Lake Ontario” to “Lake America” for U.S. users, following President Donald Trump’s executive order signed Thursday. Google will keep “Lake Ontario” for users in Canada, while people outside both countries will see both names, with “Lake America” in parentheses. The change stems from Google’s policy of mirroring official government geographic names. Trump officials celebrated the update online. Canada, meanwhile, has said it will continue to use “Lake Ontario,” including a sign unveiled by Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
