Gov. Newsom signs bills to support Los Angeles as city gets ready to host 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed three bills to support Los Angeles as it prepares to host the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The bills aim to sustain existing preparations, bolster public safety partnerships, and help student athletes competing for Team USA. Assembly Bill 2411, by Assemblymember Tina McKinnor, requires the California Office of Emergency Services to negotiate agreements with local, state, and out-of-state law enforcement agencies for temporary deployment during the Games, and it creates a temporary certification and training program through the Peace Officer Standards and Training for out-of-state personnel assisting Los Angeles. Assembly Bill 2436, authored by Assemblymember Mike Fong, extends an existing exemption that allows student athletes training for Team USA to receive resident tuition classification. Assembly Bill 191 makes temporary statutory amendments to support timely delivery and operational needs. The LA28 Games are projected to generate $20.5 to $40.6 billion, create between 126,000 and 224,000 jobs, and generate $5.1 billion in tax revenue, according to a Los Angeles County analysis.
