Have the day off, says England star as fans pull all-nighter for World Cup drama
England fans and media in the UK turned the World Cup win over Mexico into an overnight event, with supporters staying up late as the match drama kept extending beyond the early kickoff. Two-goal hero Jude Bellingham urged them to “have a day off” after England’s 3-2 thriller, which was delayed by an hour from the original 1am kick-off, meaning many did not get to bed until after 4am. The crowd filled hundreds of bars and pubs, after the UK Government extended opening hours to 5am on Monday, with 11 minutes of added time adding to the spectacle. Prince of Wales William and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer praised the team publicly. The evening began with forecast thunderstorms near the Azteca stadium, pushing kickoff further to 2am due to lightning risk.
