Holiday for New York City cops, who get a heat wave, World Cup and a Taylor Swift wedding at MSG | Fortune
A holiday weekend in New York City is set to test policing capacity, combining a heat wave, Sail 250 activity on the Hudson and East rivers, a Taylor Swift wedding at Madison Square Garden, and World Cup-related crowds at Penn Station. New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Wednesday that there are no known credible threats to the celebrations. The Sail 250 events will run across Friday, Saturday and beyond, bringing around 100 vessels and about 27,000 sailors, crew members and dignitaries, with security checkpoints for waterfront areas. On Friday evening, Tisch referenced Swift’s wedding to football player Travis Kelce, with a smaller rehearsal dinner Thursday. Counterterrorism resources, explosive-detection K-9s, bomb squad personnel, and heavy weapons teams are planned, along with aviation and drone monitoring during Macy’s July 4 fireworks launching 85,000 shells from six barges and a laser show from the Brooklyn Bridge. On Sunday, only ticket holders will be allowed into parts of Penn Station for Brazil vs. Norway.
