Horrific': 19-year-old sentenced for setting sleeping subway passenger on fire in NY
A 19-year-old man, Hiram Carrero, was sentenced to 5-and-a-half years in federal prison for setting a fire on a New York City subway passenger who was asleep. Prosecutors said Carrero received 66 months in custody after pleading guilty in March to arson related to the attack. U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said the act was horrific and noted that first responders, along with the NYPD and FDNY, helped save the victim’s life. The government alleged Carrero boarded at the 34th Street–Penn Station stop on the morning of Dec. 1, 2025, and ignited a fire using a piece of paper on a 56-year-old man. Video showed flames spreading as the train moved toward Times Square; when the train reached 42nd Street–Times Square, the man exited still on fire. The judge also ordered three years of supervised release and restitution.
