How Argonne is Supercharging Scientific Discovery

Argonne National Laboratory is positioning generative AI to accelerate scientific discovery through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission. The initiative aims to double the rate of American research output within a decade and has been compared by the White House to the Manhattan Project in urgency and ambition. Ian Foster, director of Argonne’s Data Science and Learning Division, is helping design computing systems that can use AI across the full research lifecycle—from designing experiments to running tests. Argonne projects span nuclear energy, the power grid, weather prediction, and quantum, including efforts to speed fusion reactor design and refine extreme weather forecasts using AI.
