How BBC Studios' CEO Thinks About Mega-Mergers Reshaping the Media Landscape
BBC Studios’ commercial leadership sees mega-mergers and streaming competition as both a challenge and an opportunity, according to Tom Fussell, CEO of BBC Studios and head of BBC Commercial. Speaking after BBC Commercial reported improved full fiscal-year earnings and steady record revenue earlier Tuesday, Fussell discussed growth drivers including animated hit Bluey, direct-to-consumer expansion, and documentary-focused offerings. He said profits rose 17% and that BritBox grew about 20% while BBC Select increased roughly 60%. Fussell highlighted pipeline strength with Blue Planet III and projects from Sid Gentle Films and Clerkenwell Films. He also referenced recent deal activity involving Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery and Comcast’s newly unveiled purchase of ITV’s network and streaming assets. BBC Select is positioned as the U.S.’s third-largest documentary streamer.
