How Keisha Sutton-James is making sure Percy Sutton finally gets credit for the NYC Marathon
Keisha Sutton-James, the honorary grand marshal for the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon, says she’s working to ensure her grandfather, Percy Sutton, gets lasting credit for moving the race beyond Central Park. She recounts that in 1975, the marathon needed more space than the four loops in Central Park could provide, and Sutton urged organizers to start on the Verrazzano Bridge. She describes how he approached the mayor as New York City faced financial strain and helped secure early funding from the Rudin family, including an initial $25,000 commitment. Sutton-James also argues Percy’s role was overlooked due to factors including his Civil Rights-era prominence and how race history is often shaped. She says she’ll attend many events and be present at the start and finish.
