Australia’s Beetaloo Basin gas push is being credited to U.S. shale know-how, with American oilmen arriving after years of obstacles. In September, first commercial natural gas deliveries began flowing from the Beetaloo Basin to the energy-hungry Northern Territory. Startup Tamboran and Daly Waters Energy spent years navigating permitting and industry hurdles, with Tamboran hiring an ExxonMobil and Chevron veteran as CEO in 2013. Scott Sheffield joined Santos’ board in 2014 and later involved his son Bryan. After a 2016–2018 moratorium, COVID-19 delays, and shifting ownership—Parsley sold for $4.5 billion and later bought by ExxonMobil for $60 billion—production finally started. Five wells are ramping up, generating revenue, though profitability over the long term remains unproven.
