Iceland's EU moment

With Iceland facing its EU membership referendum in just three weeks, Brussels officials are discussing a potential “package” enlargement scenario for 2028. The report says Iceland and Montenegro could join the bloc around the same time if Reykjavík votes to restart accession talks this month. Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos called Iceland a “special case” due to its EEA and Schengen membership and suggested talks could take only “one to two years,” projecting a timeline similar to Montenegro’s, which has closed more than half of its 33 accession chapters. Officials cite a precedent for bundling bids, and note joint ratification could help address French concerns about a potentially far-right, anti-enlargement president in 2027.
