Kyiv air raid alerts at record high as Russia launches round the clock strikes

Kyiv is facing more air-raid alerts each day than at any time since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022, according to BBC Verify analysis of government data. The shift is largely driven by daytime attacks on the capital, which disrupt schools, businesses, and commuters who struggle to get home when overland trains stop. Residents are being forced into shelter as many as 13 times daily, with alerts ranging from minutes to nearly four and a half hours. A new two-tier warning system is being planned. Since late August, Kyiv’s app Kyiv digital shows an average of 10 siren activations a day, including 76 alerts in the seven days from Aug. 27.
