Look Back': How A Simple Manga Story Helped Hirokazu Koreeda Get Back Behind The Camera Again - Toronto Studio

“Look Back,” directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, is being screened Monday, September 14, at the Princess of Wales Theatre as part of TIFF, with the Deadline Studio hosted at Bisha Hotel and supported by Volvo, Columbia, Patrón and Schwarzkopf. The film is based on a well-known manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto. It follows Fujino, an artist who draws comic strips for a school newspaper, as she clashes with reclusive classmate Kyomoto, briefly quitting—before teaming up with her rival and rebuilding a shared career. Tragedy later tests their bond. Kore-eda described the story as autobiographical in spirit, stemming from a personal experience reading the manga.
