Luigi Mangione's double jeopardy gambit could see him freed from prison before he turns 60

Luigi Mangione’s eleventh-hour guilty plea in federal court to stalking charges is expected to send him to prison for decades, but it also opens a potential path to release before he turns 60. On Aug. 14 in Manhattan Federal Court, Mangione admitted stalking UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson with intent to kill him on Dec. 4, 2024, citing a years-long “nightmare” navigating the health insurance system while dealing with a broken back. Within an hour, his lawyers filed a motion in a separate New York state case arguing double jeopardy, seeking dismissal of the prosecution. The state case still alleges second-degree murder and weapons offenses, and prosecutors are expected to oppose the motion by Oct. 9.
