Major Changes Passed by Australia's Parliament -- and What They Mean
Australia has passed multiple major reforms in areas ranging from gambling advertising to national security, the NDIS and media payment rules, according to a review of the past fortnight. The Interactive Gambling Amendment (Gambling Reform) Bill 2026 would ban wagering ads during live sports broadcasts, in venues, and on players’ uniforms, and also prohibit athletes, celebrities and influencers from promoting betting. ASIO will gain broader powers to question adults after the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Amendment Bill (No. 2) 2025 passed the Senate. The Incentive replaces the News Media Bargaining Code and is set to affect Google, Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn.
