Man shot, 160 arrested as riots erupt across France following World Cup loss
Violence erupted across France after the national team’s World Cup defeat to Spain, with riots reported in Paris and Lyon. The unrest involved burning fires, tear gas used by heavily armed police, and clashes that saw at least four arrests in Lyon tied to people throwing projectiles. In Lyon, a man was shot and wounded near the end of the match as France was eliminated 2-0 in the semifinals; two suspects then fled on a scooter, with the motive unknown, according to ActuLyon. Police said around 160 arrests were made nationwide, including cases involving firework mortars targeting law enforcement and emergency services. The game, played on the same day as Bastille Day, prompted delays to planned celebrations and added security deployment of 70,000 personnel.
