MapQuest tops Apple, Google Maps in downloads after refusing Trump's 'Lake America' change

MapQuest surged in app downloads after the company said it would not rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” following an executive order signed by President Trump. MapQuest reported that its mobile app received hundreds of thousands of downloads after Thursday’s announcement that the lake’s name would remain unchanged in its platform, even though Trump directed the Interior Department to update the designation in the Geographic Names Information System. By Monday morning, MapQuest ranked No. 1 in navigation apps on Apple’s U.S. App Store and No. 4 among non-gaming apps, with Canada reaching No. 2 overall. MapQuest said usage jumped about 50 times its normal level. The response contrasted with Google Maps, which began showing “Lake America” for U.S. users after the GNIS update.
