Mass Dog Vaccination Drive in Ghanaian City Reaches 70% Coverage Against
xCruzo Brief
A mass dog vaccination drive in Techiman South Metropolitan, Ghana reached an estimated 70% coverage of the city’s dog population, according to a new evaluation published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. Conducted in September 2024 under a One Health framework, the campaign met the internationally recommended threshold considered sufficient to interrupt rabies transmission. Researchers led by Prince Kyere Dwaah assessed results two weeks after the drive using mixed methods: surveys of 200 dog-owning households and reviews of administrative records, plus interviews with veterinary and public health personnel. While 51.5% vaccinated at least one dog, knowledge of rabies being fatal rose from 45% to 75% and preventable from 40% to 70%.
