Migrants in US on temporary status should seek permanent status or leave, Homeland Secretary says
Migrants in US on temporary status should seek permanent status or leave, Homeland Secretary says ties into US policy as Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told CNN on June 28 that migrants in the United States under Temporary Protected Status (TPS) should apply for permanent residence or depart. His comments followed a split Supreme Court decision from the prior week that permitted President Donald Trump’s administration to strip protection from deportation for hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian immigrants. Mullin said the government would help with paperwork and provide plane tickets plus about $2,100 to help people re-establish in their home countries. Federal law allows temporary legal residency for those fleeing war, disaster, or other conditions. TPS for Haitians began after a 2010 earthquake and for Syrians after civil war in 2012. The State Department currently warns against travel to Haiti and Syria due to widespread violence and security threats.
