MPP sentiment strengthens as disruption absorbs capacity
Confidence in the multipurpose shipping and breakbulk market has hit a post-pandemic high, according to the 23rd Market Sentiment Index (MSI) for the MPP and Breakbulk Industry. The index rose to 55.8 from 54.7 in the previous edition, based on responses from 27 carriers worldwide. MSI author Justin Archard said geopolitical and economic conditions are giving the market a tailwind, even as they destabilize the world through war, climate change, tariffs and an AI-driven energy boom. Disruption is tightening effective supply and supporting freight rates by absorbing vessel capacity. Middle East and Red Sea tensions, Panama Canal restrictions, port congestion and longer sailing distances are cited as key factors, alongside higher costs from bunkers, environmental compliance and canal auction fees. Regional sentiment varies, with US views more volatile and Asia improving amid strong export volumes; Europe remains steady, partly benefiting from tonnage diverted to Asia.
