News Summary at 8:55 a.m. EDT

AP’s 8:55 a.m. EDT news roundup highlights shifting political pressure ahead of Tuesday’s midterm vote. It describes both parties at a crossroads: Republicans face the possibility of a voter backlash against President Donald Trump and some candidates distancing themselves from him, while Democrats are preparing for a contest between establishment leaders and energized progressives. Another segment says Trump is tying help from federal programs to election outcomes, including disaster aid and benefits for veterans, with comments reported in Georgia, Ohio, and North Carolina. A separate focus turns to Israel, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc won 53 seats while the opposition won 48, leaving coalition talks necessary in a 120-seat Knesset after a vote where Arab-led parties won a record 19.
