Many National Spelling Bee contenders pursue mastery. For a few, it's more about memorization
Many National Spelling Bee contenders pursue mastery, but the methods diverge. Shrey Parikh, 14, finished third in the 2024 Bee and now in his final eligible year is pursuing a rigorous, coach-led regimen that includes three coaches, paid word lists, and study of Greek and Latin roots and word origins. He also competes in online bees year-round to sharpen recall, and on Wednesday he was one of nine semifinalists who advanced to the finals, set for Thursday night. Parikh's approach sits at one end of a broader debate in spelling circles about whether mastery of language rules or memorization carries the crown.
