Penguins 'Good Problems' Are Not; Could Lose Young Players
Ville Koivunen’s strong NHL stretch wasn’t rewarded with more ice time as Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Muse faced a stacked lineup decision in Saturday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens. The Penguins call these “good problems,” but the situation can also stall their youth movement by limiting young players’ roles. Koivunen, listed at 6-foot, 186 pounds, stands out alongside 25-year-old Elmer Soderblom, 6-foot-8 and 254 pounds, during pregame introductions, underscoring the competition for space. Muse said healthy returning players make choices difficult, yet necessary. General manager Kyle Dubas signed Koivunen to a long-term deal after he impressed in preseason, suggesting the organization wants him in the system—but recurring “healthy scratch” risk could ripple beyond Koivunen, affecting other prospects like Hendrix Lapierre.
