People have drown in Lake Macbride since 2014, including 2 recently

At least ten people have drowned at Lake Macbride and the Coralville Reservoir since 2014, including two recent victims from the Iowa City Community School District. Elementary teacher Hannah Jorgensen of Borlaug Elementary died after a field trip on Sept. 22, and fifth-grade student Ahmed Osman also died following the outing. The deaths have refocused attention on the Macbride Nature Recreation Area waterway system between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids near Solon. Reported drownings include Somphaeng “Meo” Syvixay in June 2014, 6-year-old Alaina Joy Hauskins in August 2015, and multiple cases in 2020, 2023 and 2024.
