Phil Foden's fresh start: A new coach, a new contract and a will to prove himself again
Phil Foden arrived on Manchester City’s East Asian pre-season tour in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour ready for a “fresh start” after a difficult period. The forward has signed a new four-year contract and, with Abdukodir Khusanov and Ryan McAidoo, helped launch City’s new away kit in front of 1,500 fans. The context is clear: after being Premier League Player of the Year in 2024, Foden was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup. Tuchel later told him he wouldn’t be in plans, and Enzo Maresca called to offer support as one of only two players contacted before his unveiling. Maresca said it’s “his duty” to help Foden return to his best for wins and titles. Foden spent the quiet summer fishing in France and watching England games.
