Plymouth beach closed after asbestos found in sand again. The Plymouth City Council said Mount Batten beach was shut after “high levels of asbestos fibres” were detected in the sand for a second time. The authority reported asbestos fibres in 14 of 16 sand samples, raising potential health risks. As a result, the beach will remain closed “until further notice” while investigations and additional tests are carried out. Prof Steve Maddern, Plymouth’s director of public health, said the newest sand samples are concerning and emphasized that public safety must be prioritized. The decision follows earlier asbestos concerns at the same location.
