Qualifier Krueger celebrates July 4 with Wimbledon victory

Qualifier Ashlyn Krueger marked Independence Day with a straight-sets win at Wimbledon, defeating Ukraine’s Daria Snigur 6-3, 6-2 in the third round on Saturday. Ranked 102nd in the world, Krueger was among eight American women singles players competing in southwest London to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. In the same round, 23rd seed Emma Navarro lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to 12th seed Marta Kostyuk. In the men’s draw, 23-year-old debutant Zachary Svajda took a set off fifth seed Alex de Minaur before going out 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. The crowd also anticipated Venus and Serena Williams later on Saturday in doubles versus Colombia’s Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra of Argentina.
