Researchers catch sharks off NY's Hamptons, attach trackers to toothy predators

Researchers are capturing sharks off New York’s Hamptons beaches and fitting them with small trackers to better understand what is believed to be one of the world’s few confirmed great white shark nurseries. On a day off Southampton, marine scientist Greg Metzger and colleagues caught and sampled a young sand tiger shark, taking tissue samples and attaching data devices before releasing it. The team uses different tag types, including acoustic transmitters detected along the coast and sensors that record depth and temperature for months before dropping off. Data so far shows sharks tagged here can be detected across states from North Carolina to Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, returning the following year.
