Road traffic rules to tighten near schools, speed limit set at 30 km/h

Georgia plans to tighten road traffic rules around schools, setting a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h in designated school zones. The change is part of the 2026–2030 National Road Safety Strategy Action Plan and would introduce a legal definition of a “school zone” in Georgian legislation. Officials also plan to review whether the current 15 km/h tolerance for exceeding speed limits should apply in school zones. Before the definition takes effect, the government will assess infrastructure around all operating public schools for compliance with recommendations from the Interagency Road Safety Commission. Additional work will focus on measures to improve pedestrian safety in and near school areas.
