The hearing comes as Republicans press for criminal charges against Smith, often without specifying what they want. One episode highlighted the difficulty of building a case: Sen. Eric Schmitt of Missouri suggested Smith was connected to the Fulton County, Georgia prosecution after citing text messages he said placed Smith at an Atlanta Hawks game on Feb. 3, 2024—after prosecutors Fani Willis and Nathan Wade admitted to an affair. Smith said he was not in Atlanta, and with Democrats’ help reviewed evidence showing the Hawks arena, then clarified he was at the University of Maryland for the University of Iowa women’s basketball game featuring Caitlin Clark. Amy Klobuchar urged Schmitt to apologize.
