Serbian President Vucic says he will resign within weeks
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic says he will resign within weeks, setting up early presidential and parliamentary elections after months of anti-government protests. Speaking at a pro-government rally in Belgrade, he said he would serve “only a couple of weeks” and then step down, though he did not specify an exact date or when he would dissolve parliament, a prerequisite for an early vote. The announcement follows a year-and-a-half of sometimes violent student-led anti-corruption protests and comes amid renewed demands after a November 2024 Novi Sad railway station accident that killed 16 people. Students held commemorations there and another rally is scheduled for Sunday in Kraljevo. Move-Change’s Savo Manojlovic said the move aims to preempt Vucic’s likely political loss. Serbia seeks EU membership, needing rule-of-law reforms, free elections, anti-corruption efforts, and alignment with EU foreign-policy sanctions against Russia.
