Solar eclipse glasses? Here are five ways to watch it safely

The UK is set for a rare solar eclipse on Wednesday, August 12, with the Moon passing between the Sun and Earth from 6pm. NASA says parts of Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia, and Portugal will see a total solar eclipse, while the UK will experience a partial eclipse, with up to 96% of the Sun obscured—its largest blockage since 1999. UK Health Security Agency officials warn that eclipse glasses must meet certified safety standards and should not be scratched or damaged, especially as some products may claim protection without approval. If viewers can’t get proper glasses, consultant ophthalmologist David Jones shared DIY projection methods such as pinhole viewers, a colander projection, and a dark box setup.
