Steve Clarke resigns as Scotland manager after World Cup exit
Steve Clarke has resigned as Scotland manager after seven years in the role, following Scotland’s elimination at the World Cup. Scotland finished third in Group C, with their hopes ending after results went against them: a 2-1 Croatia win over Ghana meant the Scots missed progression as one of the top eight third-placed teams to reach the last 32. They had begun with a 3-point opener win against Haiti, but the campaign unraveled thereafter. Clarke, 62, had recently signed a new four-year contract extending through to the 2030 European Championships. The Daily Record reported he issued an emotional message to his squad, staff, and supporters, reflecting on prior tournament qualification successes including standout Wembley and Germany runs. The next steps for Scotland will come as the team transitions away from his leadership.
