Taylor Farms lettuce remains at the center of the cyclosporiasis investigation even after a lab result was later ruled a false positive. The FDA said Monday that its traceback work and outbreak data “continue to converge” on shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms locations in central Mexico, urging consumers to keep avoiding products included in the company’s voluntary recall. On Sunday, Taylor Farms recalled iceberg lettuce shipped to 27 states, and Taco Bell removed affected Taylor Farms-supplied shredded lettuce from restaurants in five states. The FDA reported Saturday that a sample tested positive for cyclospora, then said Sunday the follow-up indicated the initial test “should be considered a false positive,” and Taylor Farms said the FDA “apologized” for the error. The FDA clarified that the false-positive lab sample does not change the basis for its ongoing investigation or the recall, and called tracing cyclospora in fresh produce challenging.
