Teachers can benefit from multi-year salary contracts
Teachers and school leaders in England will receive a pay rise totaling 6.5% over two years after the Secretary of State for Education fully accepted the School Teachers Review Body’s recommendations on 1 July 2026. The government said classroom pay will increase by 3.5% from September 2026 and by 3% from September 2027, amounting to a cumulative 17% increase since the general election. Alongside salaries, it announced an additional £1.8 billion for schools over two years to support pay rises for teachers and support staff. Universities and further education providers will get an extra £485 million over two years to help recruit and retain more teachers. To curb spending, academy trusts will need government approval to advertise executive roles above £174,000 from September, and officers’ increases will be aligned with head teachers’ pay. Education Minister Bridget Phillipson said the multi-year deal provides certainty for budgets.
